Internship at the alameda yoga station
JOURNAL ENTRIES
4/2/13
I know that i have to work longer hours because i am doing this internship very short notice. But so far it isn't so hard i just have to do a lot of walking every day. The description of the internship was to help spread the news of the workshops and classes that the teachers there are teaching. At first I had to send out emails to make sure that the people working there knew I was going to send out flyers or cards or whatever they had to alameda. Emailing them took way longer then i would have hoped in reality it took like more than 5 hours to make sure everything was perfect and i needed like 4 people to proofread it and i was very obsessed with it but i only put 2 1/2 hours down because that would have been really odd. Everyone seemed so nice and i was very happy to meet them all.
4/3/13
Today is the day where i get all the flyers to send out to stores that accept flyers hanging around and/or in their restaurants/shops. I found it scary and i was really very nervous and did NOT do as much as a could but i really looked around and thought hard about what i needed to do. But i did this for 4 straight hours and was pretty tired when i came home.
4/4/13
I was locked out and i didn't have a key so i needed to wait for my mother to give one to me so scratch this day off the list, coulda used it too.
4/5/13
This time i stayed out for 5 hours with a friend to help me not be so shy. Five hours doesn't seem very long when you have a friend to make you laugh. It was hard to find places that let you put things in the windows. I wanted to go to the bank but i was so nervous that i couldn't go in. A lot of places were just poles and trees that we put up the papers on, that seemed to work very nicely. I haven't really worked with many people not including emails.
4/6/13
Today i worked all day in the station! I straightened everything out in the back room and swept, folded, rearranged, organized drawers, took out the garbage and other little things here in there, oh i vacuumed too. None of that was that big of a deal, i met this really neat guy Raul he was dressing as a pirate guy he had a cool sailor hat. I helped him put his bow tie on.
4/7/13
Today was really dumb, I was suppose to install a fire extinguisher but the installer ended up not being there so i had no idea what to do. In the end it turns out that there WAS a piece but there also was a one already mounted on the wall so i just sorta put it there. Dumb huh. After i go to the station i usually post flyers on the way home.
4/8/13
Not my last day but its my last official day. I went out and posted a few things at school and after school. Thats all i really have to say i'm stressed.
CLOSING REPORT
During my internship I have met a few really nice people and have realized how much I like to help people and do favors for them. I needed a few different kinds of skills like I needed to be able to plan out where I needed to go and lots of time management. I needed to use social skills too to be friendly and ask what I needed to do and most of all I needed to be able to ask and talk to restaurant owners and other stores to be able to put these flyers down. I found that, that indeed was the hardest part for me. Now it isn't as hard as it was in the beginning, but then it was. I managed to work a little bit on my shyness to just get my hours done and do a good job for the Alameda Yoga Station. I also had to do a lot of physical things. I personally don't work out ever, so it was difficult for me to perform lifting heavy things and lift them up. But that was the most fun and most easy part, (easy because I was alone and I didn't need to interact with people as much) for me so I’m glad I did it. Every day no matter what I walked around new places or old places to drop off flyers and/or cards for the teachers at AYS. On some other days I went into the attic and looked around seeing if I could move anything or fix anything. There is a law that states everything in the attic needs to be moved at least three feet away from the heating system because it might catch in fire. Luckily things were already moved and I still plan on helping them. At the very beginning of the internship I didn't know much of what i was to do. I thought that I was going to be doing a lot of cleaning but instead I did a lot of walking around and put things in cafes and restaurants. I thought that the internship wasn't going to be as hard as it was but I found it to be quite difficult. My mother has worked there a lot of times before and has told me many things about the Yoga Station, one of the teachers said she met my mom in 1997, I was only 2. I actually didn't see any Yoga and I personally have tried and taught it with my mom and don’t like it very much so I found that part of it good. There was much more communication with a lot of people then I thought there was going to be in the internship, I had to speak with many different people and email many of them too. Overall I found it quite wonderful and I’m still plan on helping the AYS for a while longer, I really feel like it is very rewarding to help people and I want to continue.
